8 popular options for getting around Bangkok

Hey, it’s Monchai again!

Dreading the thought of renting a car or motorcycle in Bangkok, like me? You're in luck! Thailand's modern capital offers numerous convenient ways to explore its hectic streets.

The City of Angels, as Bangkok is fondly known, is an energetic metropolis bursting with yummy street food, alluring culture, and mind-bending sights (in the best way possible!). Let me guide you through the various public transportation options that'll help you navigate this urban jungle like a seasoned local.

1. BTS Skytrain: The Elevated Adventure

My personal favorite! Think of the BTS Skytrain as your air-conditioned magic carpet ride above city chaos. With its two main lines—Sukhumvit and Silom—this elevated train system whisks you across Bangkok while treating you to spectacular city views, all while bypassing the notorious traffic below.

Pro Tip: Invest in a Rabbit Card if you'll use the BTS more than a few times for multiple days. This smart card doesn't just make boarding seamless, it's also accepted at various food courts, including the one at Siam Paragon shopping mall. Plus, it gives you instant local credibility!

2. MRT Subway: The Underground Express

When you're ready to go underground, the MRT Subway also offers a swift and air-conditioned journey. While its coverage isn't as extensive as the BTS for tourist spots, it connects key locations like the sprawling Chatuchak Market and the serene Lumphini Park. Plus, be on the lookout for additional MRT routes coming online soon.

Fun Fact: Many MRT stations double as art galleries and shopping havens. These "underground malls" are packed with commuter-friendly shops and services. Check out my blog about an affordable underground barber shop I discovered in 2022, by clicking HERE.

3. Tuk-tuks: The Tourist Must-Try

No Bangkok experience is complete without at least one tuk-tuk ride! These iconic three-wheelers offer a thrilling way to travel short distances, though they tend to be much pricier than other options and the driver most likely won’t bargain much with you. A quick 5-10 minute spin around the neighborhood is enough to tick this off your bucket list.

Important Warning: When visiting the Grand Palace (Wat Phra Kaew), beware of tuk-tuk drivers claiming, "the palace is closed today." This is a common tourist trap—simply continue walking around the perimeter until you find the open entrance.

4. Buses: The Budget-Friendly Option

For the adventurous traveler, Bangkok's extensive bus network offers an authentic local experience at bargain prices. However, there are some caveats:

  • Schedules can be unpredictable—avoid if you're on a tight timeline

  • Not all buses have air conditioning and Bangkok’s heat can be brutal

5. Boats: River Adventures

The Chao Phraya River's network of water taxis offers both transportation and sightseeing in one very affordable trip. The riverside breeze provides welcome relief from Bangkok's heat, and you'll get unique views of the city's landmarks. I often use this service to get from Bangkok’s city center (Sathorn Pier) to my aunt’s neighborhood pier (Tha Nam Non) in the Nonthaburi suburb, a solid 45 minute boat ride for only $0.50 USD. What a deal!

Must-Visit Stops:

  • Tha Tien Pier for Wat Pho (home of the reclining Buddha)

  • Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

6. Grab: Your Digital Transport Solution

Think Uber or Lyft, but for Southeast Asia. Grab offers convenient car and motorcycle services, plus food delivery. Simply download the app, input your destination, and wait for your ride. The Bolt ride-hailing service is another option. Always verify your driver's details before getting in!

7. Regular Taxis: The Traditional Choice

Look for the illuminated dashboard light to spot available taxis. If you don’t see the taxi fare meter lit up when starting your journey, always ask "Meter OK?" to ensure fair pricing. Ninety-nine percent of these drivers are genuine and hard-working, but always use your spidey senses as needed.

Safety Note: Trust your instincts— if something feels off, wait for another taxi to avoid being overcharged. Also, during late nights within the tourist areas, most taxis won’t turn on their meters simply because transportation options are limited during the nightlife hours. You can try to negotiate the price, but most likely, you won’t be offered a daytime fare.

8. Motorcycle Taxis: The Traffic Dodgers

For thrill-seekers, motorcycle taxis offer the ultimate Bangkok experience. These nimble two-wheelers zip through traffic jams, offering quick and affordable transport. While not for the faint-hearted, they provide an exhilarating taste of Bangkok's fast-paced lifestyle.

Safety Note: This option comes with obvious risks and isn't recommended for conservative travelers. However, Thailand's live-and-let-live attitude makes this a popular choice among adventurous souls.

Final Thoughts

While Bangkok's transportation system might initially seem as complex as solving a Rubik's Cube blindfolded, it's surprisingly manageable once you know your options. Whether you choose the efficient BTS Skytrain, the iconic tuk-tuk, or the adventurous motorcycle taxi, each mode of transport offers its own unique way to experience this fascinating city.

Safe travels!
